I never have. I also leave the “Do not Disturb” sign out for my entire stay, and tidy up the room before I leave.

Really!

They are probably getting minimum wage

Maid service - $3-5 per day typically, up to $10 per day depending upon how much mess you make. Tip daily because there might be a different maid each day. Leave the tip on your pillow. Err on the side of being generous, and tip on the last day also. If they change out your linens by request, give $1-2 each time.

I don’t. I’ve never heard a sufficient explanation as to why I should. Only reason I’ve heard is because they don’t make much. That’s not a valid reason.

For what it’s worth I think tipping is ridiculous.

If I’m staying for 2-3 nights I don’t need or want fresh everything every day. I noticed they are not changing linens everyday much anymore, but do towels and those little bars of soap.

I did but ended up with bed bug bites and a swollen arm and stomach from those bites. Worse than my allergic reaction to mosquito bites.

Tipping isn’t really a thing in South East Asia, so neither I or my family have tipped wherever we went.

In fact the rest of my family is more concerned about housekeeping stealing something.

Kinja'd!!!4

This is subjective for me. If it’s a normal/short hotel stay, I usually don’t tip but keep the room clean on my own.

If it’s something like a wedding weekend where were we bang all over the place/trash the room/eat everything in the mini fridge. I will tip $20-$50. Especially if we’re in a rush to leave the room.

I tipped on our honeymoon, because they did our laundry!

I was taught to always tip at least a few bucks, like 2 bucks per bed per night minimum. If I can afford a hundred bucks a night for a room, I can afford to leave a few bucks for whoever cleans up after I leave.

In the US service workers are paid shit wages so they generally rely on tipping to make up the wage gap. You need to be in the $15-$20/hr range for a livable wage here and they are probably making minimum $8-10/hr.

Tipping is a way for minimum wage workers to make a livable wage. It is a shitty system tho. They should be getting paid more to begin with.

Kinja'd!!!4

Alternatively if you are paying $100-$150/night in a 50-100 room hotel that is at 95% occupancy then you would think that the hotel could afford to pay 4 housekeeping staff a living wage for their work during the day.

$20/hr for a livable wage? Granted, this varies drastically by region, but $40k/yr is so, so far from the median right now.

Not everyone who receives tips even makes minimum wage - just look at servers and waiters. They make something like 2 dollars an hour.

When I’m traveling, I actually don’t like having my room cleaned on the daily. It’s a privacy thing, I guess. I’m rarely in a hotel in the US for more than two nights, so I don’t worry about it. When I’m overseas, it’s usually for a solid week or more, and I usually leave at least $20 or equivalent when I depart. My reasoning being that they’re probably paid differently from in the US, and so I don’t want anyone to have lost earnings on account of my personal preferences. Also, I usually have some leftover per diem, so why not?

Kinja'd!!! Xyl0c41n3 > spanfucker retire bitch

That IS the legal minimum wage for waiters. Or for people who are expected to earn part of their wages via tips.

It’s a stop gap between shamefully low wages and guaranteed minimum income, this time directly paid by the consumer so trickle down fantasy can continue to live on for a few more years.

Kinja'd!!! Chuckles > Highlander-Datsuns are Forever
07/10/2017 at 14:24

Kinja'd!!!1

That would be nice, but that’s expecting a lot out of a large company. If all 100 rooms are filled, and everybody tips $2/bed/night (let’s assume half the rooms are 1 king bed and half are 2 queen beds), that’s $300 split 4 ways or $75 per staff member. That’s assuming everybody tips which we know they don’t so maybe they get $40 a night. That’s a nice amount of money for someone who probably has no other career options, and it was only a negligible amount of money for the people who can afford to stay at the hotel. You pay 2 bucks for a bottle of soda in the hotel lobby.

Also, if good tips encourages housekeeping to do a better job cleaning up rooms between guests, I’m all for it.

Never heard of it. And tipping just because is bullshit. If they did a good job and you thing they deserve a little extra for the effort they put in, yeah, sure, leave a tip. If they’re just doing the job they were hired to do, at the expected standards, why should giving them a raise fall on the customer? Just like paying the bartender a dollar just to twist the cap off your already overpriced beer.

Kinja'd!!! TorqueToYield > Highlander-Datsuns are Forever
07/10/2017 at 14:29

Kinja'd!!!1

Tipping $5 on the first night of a week long business trip gets me a significantly cleaner room the rest of the trip. I’ll then leave a couple bucks at the end if they do a good job. Total about 2-3$ a night.

If it’s only 1 night I may or may not tip. If I leave lots of trash I do.

You’re also supposed to tip the doorman if they bring stuff up for you.

I wonder if housekeeping falls under the same wage laws as servers. I doubt it. Also a good server in a decent restaurant has an opportunity to make way more money in tips than a housekeeper does. My mom routinly pulled in $100/night in the 80's when she was a waitress.

I’ve never tipped anybody at a hotel, but then I live somewhere tipping isn’t used to make up the wages.

I’ve been in America, which I’m told is tipping central, but I stayed in motels and I guess they don’t expect it.

Kinja'd!!! Xyl0c41n3 > spanfucker retire bitch
07/10/2017 at 14:40

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah. I definitely agree. Which is why it’s so infuriating when people say stuff like they’ve never heard a “valid” explanation why THEY should pay someone a tip. Tip-dependent wages are an awful thing, but not half as awful as the people who are so selfish they’d stiff their fellow human beings a decent wage for their service because they don’t like the idea of tips. Especially when they know full well that the people who work tip-dependent jobs are getting paid a lower wage because of the expectation they earn tips.

IIRC, housekeepers fall under regular minimum wage requirements, which means $7.25/hour. But it’s skilled labor, and it’s backbreaking labor. A housekeeper in a non-hospitality job (i.e.: janitors at office buildings, housekeepers or maid service for private residences, etc.) generally receive higher wages than a hotel or motel housekeeper. Especially if that housekeeper works at a budget joint. A small part of the hospitality industry in general, these men and women absolutely depend on tips.

It is, if every restaurant would just start including 15% gratuity on all bills (which a few in my area are already doing), the staff in a lot of restaurants would probably come out ahead.

It wouldn’t be like a no-tipping restaurant, so they’d still be able to get tips on top of the 15% and they also avoid the stingy assholes who don’t tip at all.

Higher end restaurants? They could potentially disagree with this. I’m not sure.

Same for me. I don’t particularly want anyone in my room during a hotel stay. The sign goes up as soon as I walk in. I don’t tip. As a general rule, I hate tipping. For service industries where this is the norm, I’d much rather just pay the tip amount in my bill instead of deciding how much they are worth.

I usually do, but I have an ex-hotel manager friend that says it isn’t expected. Of course, some hotels put envelopes in the room for that specific purpose, which they wouldn’t do if it wasn’t expected, sooo...

Cruise ships are of course a different story. Those cabin stewards make like $1 an hour, and sent 75 cents of it home to their family in the Philippines, so you’d better damn well tip them.
